I like your optimism, and I'm cautiously optimistic about President Biden. Thus far, he's been a far more effective leader than I thought he would be, or than my neighbors deserve.

But the rot you speak of and ascribe to Britain is here in the US as well. Mr. Biden won, and won by a fair margin despite the howling on the right.

But overall, the government moved a bit more to the right.

The United States does not have a center left party. It has an ultra-right party, and a center right party with a few almost-left representatives in it.

The ultra right party is in favor of burning the world down so they can shoot up malls, churches that are not evangelical, foreigners, and grocery stores. They are proud of everything that a functioning society should view in shame, and they are absolutely willing to destroy any vestiges of democracy to continue to be infantile. I don't see it turning around any time soon.

I would like to be wrong. Joe turned out to be more resolved and more radical (sort of) than I had dared hope, but still we have Republicans like Sinema and Manchin standing in the way of any meaningful change. Yes, I'm aware that both of those mentioned claim to be Democrats. Actions speak louder than labels, and they are not Democrats with a big D, and most assuredly not deomcratically inclined.

Meanwhile, the world burns while we sit on vaccines for no reason...
