In defense of the welfare state

The so-called Pro-life position espoused by the religious right in the United States of America makes absolutely no sense.

As a label, it fails because they aren’t in favor of life after the child is born, they’re just opposed to abortion. But they’re not even really opposed to that, if you look beneath the surface. It’s a matter of time, usually, before the most vocal proponents of this nonsense get exposed. They are usually male, always pompous, and usually paid for and/or coerced a woman they were in a relationship with to have an abortion.

While the above is true, there are a few more or less honest Pro-life folk out there.

They are confused. They may not realize it. If you are one of them, this missive is for you. I will be blunt, but I will try not to be unkind.

If you claim to be Pro-life, then you must be in favor of cradle to grave welfare.

That is not hyperbole, and it achieves your consciously stated aim of reducing abortions.

Let me explain. Because I know this creates a strong spasm at that joint halfway down your leg.

If you insist that a woman who is pregnant carries the baby to term, then you also have taken upon yourself a moral obligation to see that she is…
