Something else that can be done, and this falls on the voters and the administration, is to make certain that the constant bullying of anyone who is not either a jock or a cheerleader is not sanctioned, aided, and abetted by the general staff.
My bitter words might make it seem that I'm against public education. I am not, but it is a mess in the US, and from what I've seen of the younger generations, it has gotten culturally worse than it was in the 80's, when it was more or less a criminal sentence to be a schoolboy who did maths and computers.
