That indeed may be a more realistic take.

Here in Idaho, the level of sheer ignorance without any thought is more than a bit frightening, yet outside of the political arena, they aren't (mostly) horrible people.

But damn are they against socialism of any flavor, especially their imaginary flavors. The few I've felt safe enough to discuss it with, however, have not the first clue what even the textbook definition of socialism is.

Those at the top of the conservative movement are clearly sociopaths. A cursory reading of the literature would make me confident in that analysis, and my reading is significantly above cursory, though well below the level of expert. They are, almost without exception, well educated and well travelled. They know they're lying.

The rank and file? That's a harder call.
