I have been put on suspension in school for wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt, once got an earful for wearing a cross earring upside down (because satanism. I'm not a satanist, and it was an accident caused by grooming oneself at 5AM..) told that Rush(!) was a satanic band, etc. Oh, and that long hair... Kid you're goin' to hell!

My music was historical, poetic, and political. Theirs was, usually, mundane in poetry, lackluster in execution, and dealt with abhorrent themes, but country is "wholesome". I didn't care that they listened to music I couldn't stomach, but they, the arbiters of "education" couldn't stand my music, or frankly, myself, existing.

And I look white. The black and brown dudes got it worse. This was over 30 years ago, and it's STILL like this!
