Universal Basic Income:
Universal Basic Income. A phrase that causes knees to jerk across the political spectrum, but lately, particularly on the so-called right.
Why is kind of unknown, other than the ‘need’ to ‘own the libs’ that seems to drive their every emotion. But many of those who have proposed basic income over the years were conservatives. Modern conservatives will deny that, but oh well. Even Tricky Dick proposed it.
So, what does it mean, what does it do, and how do we make it happen? These are all important questions. I am actively writing a book on the subject, which I hope to have in draft form in about two months, but in the interim, I’m going to write about it here. Both because the discussion is important, and because I think I’ll get a lot of good ideas from readers. Despite the elite contention to the contrary, the working class has a lot of strong thinkers. Just not much time to think.
Overview:
Basic income, or Universal Basic Income (UBI) at root is a cash payment to either every citizen, or a means tested cash payment to every citizen who falls below a certain threshold. The idea is to alleviate poverty so that every citizen is able to maintain a passable lifestyle.
